Episodes

Every episode continues our series on self and business leadership, basic veterinary business, and emotional fitness, to support veterinary teams in creating influential cultures.

Episode 1

How to Create a Mentally Healthy Workplace

In this episode, Dr Leanne Wall brings a broad medical, leadership, facilitation and coaching background, gained over 25 years working in clinical and corporate settings and with external consultants to national and international organisations. With over two decades of hands-on experience in corporate healthcare, she has led small and large diverse teams across local and regional leadership roles, championing Women in Leadership and mental health and wellbeing initiatives.

We discuss taking the bull by the horns: using proven techniques to build resilience and create a mentally healthy workplace by changing daily habits around mental health and wellbeing. She explains how she came to this field, helping business leaders and the healthcare teams they serve care not only for their patients but for themselves, and shares her thoughts on how our brains work and what we have to actively recognise in order to self-care.

Property Advice with Joanne Scott, Collar ’n Cap

Our influencer this time is Joanne Scott of Collar ’n Cap. What hooks may you have swallowed in your lease agreements?

I selected Joanne for the section on basic veterinary business knowledge as a specialist in commercial tenant representation, and in particular for a really important agreement that we all sign and may be unaware of. As Jo puts it, these are the hooks we may have inadvertently swallowed. We all know what happens when a dog swallows a fish hook: sometimes a simple fix, occasionally a very expensive one.

Now, I am presuming of course that as a veterinary business owner your current agreements are all perfect and your advisory team have them well tied up. What if you had a professional looking after your property agreements?

Veterinary Practice Advice with Dr Paolo Lencioni, APL Accountants

We discuss the availability of AI for the veterinary industry with Paolo, who has extensive knowledge of the veterinary business, including diagnostic, clinical and surgical work. Paolo works exclusively with veterinary businesses and does not take on non-veterinary clients.

He and his wife Anne analyse veterinary practices daily, which gives him insight into what makes a practice profitable and what does not. He receives monthly data feeds from over 300 practices across Australia and New Zealand, giving him a comprehensive understanding of the industry. His perspective on the current post-COVID situation, and his advice for young veterinarians, is invaluable.

Vets-In-Mind with Dr Mark Johnston, founder of VetLexicon and Vets-In-Mind.org

We discuss always following your passion, even if the professional ride leads to burnout and beyond. When the dark forces are circling.

“It’s not been a great day. And they said no to you. Just believe you’re a bird, and you’re on the edge of a cliff, and you’re looking over that cliff. And it’s not a great view, is it? No, it isn’t. All you need to do is open your wings, and let the uplift get under your wings, and it will take you somewhere else.”

The profession needs to admit to the morbidity of mental health and do something meaningful about it. Dr Mark Johnston
